ACL Tear Guider

An ACL tear refers to a sprain or tear of the anterior cruciate ligament, one of the key ligaments that help stabilize your knee joint. It's a common injury, especially among athletes who play sports involving sudden stops, jumping, or changes in direction like football, basketball, and soccer.

ACL Anatomy and Function

  • The ACL runs diagonally in the middle of the knee.
  • It connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone).

Its main functions are to:

  • Sudden stops or changes in direction
  • Pivoting with a foot firmly planted
  • Awkward landings from jumps
  • Direct blows to the knee (e.g., football tackles)

Causes of ACL Tears

ACL tears commonly occur from:

  • Sudden stops or changes in direction
  • Pivoting with a foot firmly planted
  • Awkward landings from jumps
  • Direct blows to the knee (e.g., football tackles)

Grade Description ACL Condition Stability Common Treatment
Grade 1 (Mild) Minor stretching or microscopic tearing Intact but strained Slight laxity Physical therapy, bracing
Grade 2 (Moderate) Partial tear Partially torn and loose Slight laxity Bracing, rehab (sometimes surgery if unstable)
Grade 3 (Severe) Complete tear Torn into two pieces Knee often unstable Surgery + physiotherapy

Grade 3 Tear or Complete Tear needs to be confirmed with a DYE Test. Unless there is a DYE Test conducted. Do not opt for any treatment options.
